Website translations

On the website you can have multiple languages. One of these languages will be your master language.

Some users find translations on the website a bit tricky. This is mostly when editing a text in master and then realizing that the translations for the same text have disappeared on the website. If this is an issue you recognize, keep reading :)

The website translations works like this:

All translations on the website are connected to the master language. The translations are done by sections/paragraphs. Each translated paragraph has a connection to the same paragraph in the master language. So if you were to change a specific paragraph in master, there is a risk that the translation for this paragraph will disappear on the website since Odoo may no longer find the connection to the master version of this paragraph.

To prevent this from happening, you can handle your website translations in two different ways;

Option 1: edit master frontend on the website

How to do it:

1. Before making any changes to the site, copy all text from the page you want to edit and paste it into a document. Do this for all languages on this page. This is to create an easily accessible backup with all of your translations if any text were to disappear on the site after you have made your change in master.
   
   
2. Make your changes to the page (always start with the master language) and save.
   
   
3. Lastly, check the page in all languages to see if any translations were lost. If so, go back to your backup document and copy the translation there. Add the translation back to the website and save.

Option 2: edit all website texts backend

Instead of changing the text directly on the website, you can choose to only work backend. If language Swedish is your master language for example, then when you edit this text on the website you will automatically edit the master text. In the backend you have the option to edit the Swedish text as a translation (instead of the master language), exactly like all other languages you have. So when editing the website texts backend you don’t need to edit master at all. And if you don’t edit master you will not affect the connection to the other translations.

How to do it:

1. Go backend in Odoo and activate developer mode.
   
   
2. Go to Settings - Technical - Views
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
3. Search for the page you want to edit, for example this page called Deepskin Organics. Please note, if you have a multi website environment, you might see multiple pages with the same name. Like in this example, we have a page called Deepskin Organics for the website End Customer and a page with the same name for the website Partner. Choose the one you want to edit.
   
   
   
   
   
   
   
4. Click on Edit Translations to see all translations for this page.
   
   
   
   
   
   
5. Edit your text in the translation column. If there is text in the translation field, this text will be displayed on the website. If there is not any text in the translation field, the internal source text will be displayed (this is the master text). As long as you don’t make any changes to the source text and only change the text in the translation field, it will not affect the other translations on the website.
